Week 3 — Final Project
Cluster Journey
Day 1
For the first day of our third week of COSMOS, we started creating our final projects. Our final project was going to be a game that we would need to showcase both to our other cluster members and to everyone else next week Friday. For our first day, we spent the day brainstorming our idea for the game: we decided to create a baking game where all the characters are animals. The game would be very cozy and relaxing. At the end of class, everyone had to pitch their ideas for their game to everyone in the class. We were able to successfully pitch our game and get it approved for creation. Our teacher even helped us by giving us a cookbook of french pastries.
Day 2
Today, we begin producing our game. I reused my previous scripts for the player movement and customer AI. However, I created new scripts for baking the food which would just be allowing for two different ingredients to be dropped in a specific area to turn into a type of food and another script which allowed the customer AI to disappear once the food was served which is when the player clicks on them while holding the finished food. My team members focused on designing the backgrounds and the characters. I imported their art and animated them using the Unity animator. We now have a complete simple level of the game!
Day 3
For our second day of making the game, I wanted to make sure we have a complete end to end prototype of the game. I created a start scene and win screen and made sure to rig up the game so that the player can progress through these scenes. I also added in a dialogue script which will be used later for conveying the story of the game. I worked on the UI and imported the UI assets my members made. As of now, we have a complete end to end prototype of the game.
Day 4
Today, we took a break from creating our games and went to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. It contained a vast collection of various computer artifacts that would go over the 2000 years of computing. It was interesting to walk through the galleries and see the development of the computers.
Day 5
We had our first playtest today. Before we began playtesting, our instructors went over the guidelines for running a playtest which included tips such as not interfering with the playtesting process in order to get the most accurate player experience. After the playtest, we could ask the player different questions in order to gauge and record their feelings and thoughts about our games. The player feedback was very helpful for improving our games and brought up problems we never noticed. Week 3 was a very fulfilling and exciting week!
